Bill Wyman Crystal Palace FC Supporter Story - featured

Bill's journey as a lifelong Crystal Palace FC supporter

In a recent Crystal Palace programme in March, Bill Wyman shared the story of how his lifelong support for Crystal Palace F.C. began – with a single match in 1946.

On 26th October 1946, just after his tenth birthday, Bill’s father took him to Selhurst Park for his first Crystal Palace game. It was the first season after the Second World War, with Palace playing Port Vale in the Third Division South.

The result was a 2–1 defeat, and on the journey home, his father joked that Palace “couldn’t beat the blind school.” Despite the disappointment, the experience left a lasting impression. As Bill recalls, he had been “stung for life.”

From that point on, he followed the club closely. In the years that followed, Palace were relegated to the Fourth Division before rising again with two promotions to reach the Second Division. As a young supporter, Bill would walk from his home in Penge to Selhurst Park, paying sixpence to stand behind the Holmesdale Road goal. He would also attend reserve matches when the first team were playing away.

Among the players he watched, his early hero was the right half Terry Long, who played for Palace for 15 seasons. During that time, Bill also recalls the impact of Johnny Byrne, who scored freely and was selected for England while still playing in the Third Division, as well as the influence of Steve Kember.

After living in France from 1971 to 1982, Bill returned to London and resumed attending matches regularly. During the 1989/90 and 1990/91 seasons, he became friends with players including Ian Wright, Mark Bright and Andy Gray, and remained connected to the club during a period in which they finished third in the First Division under manager Steve Coppell.

Bill also recalls missing the FA Cup Final against Manchester United, as he was rehearsing in Amsterdam with The Rolling Stones. Unable to attend, he arranged to return to London for dental treatment before the tour began.

Back in London, he attended the FA Cup Final replay, describing it as an “amazing game,” with Ian Wright coming off the bench to score twice in a 3–3 draw. A few days later, he reconnected with the players, receiving Ian Wright’s boots from the match and Mark Bright’s shirt – both of which he still owns.

Over the years, his connection to Crystal Palace extended beyond matchdays. He formed friendships with figures including Mark Bright, Dougie Freedman, chairman Steve Parish and Roy Hodgson, and continued to attend games regularly.

Reflecting on that first match in 1946, Bill notes that you never know what a first game will bring. For him, it marked the beginning of a lifelong connection to Crystal Palace.

The original programme from that day – featured here – holds particular significance. It was recently given to Bill by his daughter, Jessy, who purchased it from a collector, bringing his story full circle nearly 80 years after his first visit to Selhurst Park.

Chris Rea – Bill pays tribute to a very special friend

Bill has shared his tribute to Chris Rea following news of his sad passing today.

Bill says:

I was very sad to hear of the passing of my great friend Chris Rea.

Chris worked with me on a number of charitable causes, including the ‘Willie & The Poor Boys’ album and film. He performed on some of my solo recordings, and a lot of Rhythm Kings songs too.

He has also left us with a great collection of his own wonderful songs and recordings.

Chris Rea was someone very special to me.

- Bill Wyman

Bill also shared a photo he took of Chris during a recording session together, which is shared below.

78 years a fan – Bill's Crystal Palace journey

My father took me on my 10th birthday to my first Crystal Palace football match on 26th October 1946 – the first season after World War II. They were playing against Pert Vale in the 3rd Division and lost 2-1.

From that day they became my team, and I have followed them and seen them rise from the 4th, to the 3rd divisions into the 2nd and then the 1st division, and finally into the Premiership, where they are now an established team.

After the first FA Cup Final that I attended – thanks to manager Steve Coppell at the time – it was a 3-3 draw, and my friends Ian Wright gave me his boots while Mark Bright gave me his shirt.

I’ve waited 78 years for this momentous occasion to happen – and it finally did on Saturday - third time lucky.

Long Live the Eagles – with Europe next season!

A fan forever

As founding member and rhythm architect of The Rolling Stones, Bill became a household name, revered by fans and peers alike. With a career spanning over six decades, Wyman steps back into the spotlight with a fresh collection of songs showcasing his passion and talent. Five tracks, including the album’s title track are self-penned, a testament to Bill’s enduring songwriting talent. “It’s not something I do every day, but sometimes I just see a guitar in the corner of the room, pick it up to play around and then something clicks into place,” he explains.

Recorded at Wyman’s home studio, 'Drive My Car' features a tight-knit group of long-time collaborators, including guitarist Terry Taylor and drummer Paul Beavis. “A bass player and a drummer are a team, you’re the rhythm section, the foundation of the whole thing,” Bill emphasises. The album opens with a unique rendition of Bob Dylan’s 'Thunder On The Mountain,' combining elements from both Dylan's original and Wanda Jackson’s lively cover. “I’ve known Bob since the mid-‘60s," says Bill. "He used to take me and Brian Jones round the Greenwich Village clubs whenever we were in New York. We were very good friends for a while, he was a really nice guy.”

Another highlight is a gritty cover of Taj Mahal’s 'Light Rain.' Bill recounts their long-standing friendship, which began in 1968 when Taj was invited to join The Stones Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus TV special. “He was fascinated that I was a member of the Royal Horticultural Society – we bonded over botany!” he recalls fondly.

Bill’s lifelong love of country music is evident with a poignant tribute to John Prine, featuring a cover of 'Ain’t Hurtin’ Nobody.' “We were very great friends, and the Rhythm Kings did a few of his tracks. What a lyricist! I love that line in ‘Ain’t Hurtin’ Nobody’ about ‘Little Richard singing Tutti Frutti from the top of a telephone pole’ – I mean, who writes like that?!”

In addition to honouring old friends, Bill introduces listeners to new talents like Dutch guitarist Hans Theessink, whose work informed two tracks on the album. Despite never meeting in person, Bill is a champion of Hans’ fresh take on blues music. “I find his stuff really inspiring; he brings something new to the blues.”

Bill Wyman had a busy 2023, both looking back and looking forward. The oldest of the Rolling Stones (“they all talk about the war, but none of them remember it like I do!”), Bill mined his memories for vivid anecdotes of his wartime childhood and published them in an engrossing book, Billy In The Wars. At the same time he was planning for the future, recording the songs for 'Drive My Car'.

Reflecting on the album’s overall sound, Bill cites JJ Cale as a major influence. “I think the biggest influence on the album as a whole is JJ Cale, his laidback groove has always appealed to me. Friends I’ve played it to have said things like ‘it really sounds like you’, and that makes me happy. I’ve never tried to be anyone else - I’m Bill, basically.”

'Drive My Car' is a new and energised chapter in Bill’s storied career, a testament to his unwavering passion and the lifelong joy he finds in creating music, which continues to motor on.

“When Bill Wyman plucked the bass strings for the Rolling Stones, his meticulous nature wasn't just confined to his musical precision. It extended far beyond the stage, into the realm of obsessive archiving. It's this lesser-known facet of Wyman's personality that turned him into the band's ultimate historian, a curator of memories that paint a vibrant picture of rock and roll's most iconic era.”

Some of Bill's property will be up for auction with Julien's Auctions in their Music Icons sale on May 29th - 30th.

Items range from ‘Some Girls’ Promo Posters to a Bill Wyman Signed #5 Copy of "Blinds & Shutters" Book and much more. These pieces are a must-have for any music collector & enthusiast.

Alongside these items, Bill has also donated two pieces where all proceeds will be going to the Prince's Trust; a signed limited edition colour photograph of the Rolling Stones, and a signed copy of Bill's 'Stones From The Inside' book of photography of the band. Billy in the Wars is the illustrated memoir of ex-Rolling Stone Bill Wyman, recalling his experiences as a young boy growing up in wartime Britain. Bill brings history to life through the personal lens of his childhood memories, where grim anecdotes of war are punctuated by moving moments of childhood innocence and joy. Three-year-old William George Perks (now Bill Wyman) was living with his parents and brother in working-class Sydenham, South London, when war broke out. Over the coming years he experienced endless terrifying hours spent in air-raid shelters, the constant droning of doodlebugs overhead, a near miss with a German fighter-bomber, and evacuations from London to new rural adventures. Out of a backdrop of constant fear and hunger, Bill learned the importance of persistence, courage and resilience; values that ultimately led him out of his neighbourhood and on to a vast and exciting future.

Bill attended the World premiere of 'The Great Escaper', starring Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson last Wednesday at the BFI Southbank, London.

The film is based on the true story of a British WW2 veteran who escaped from his nursing home to attend the 70th anniversary D-Day commemorations in France in 2014

Bill was very pleased to receive an invitation from his great friends Michael and Shakira Caine, who he has known since the 1970’s, and greatly enjoyed the film.

"Charlie’s auction of his collection of books is unbelievable! I have known from over the years that my best friend Charlie collected many things in his life – as I did, but this particular collection of books astounded me."

- Bill Wyman

The auction is a two-part auction comprising an extraordinary library of modern first editions together with landmarks from the world of jazz, collected by renowned musician and Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts (1941–2021).

The flagship auction, Charlie Watts: Literature and Jazz Part I, will take place live in London on 28 September, with a Part II open for bidding from 15 to 29 September.

Bill Wyman has worked in the London borough of Chelsea on-and-off since joining the Rolling Stones in 1962, and has lived in the area since 1982. Over the past few years, Bill has walked every street of his beloved neighbourhood, photographing anything unusual that caught his eye: bridges, churches, pubs, shops, houses, monuments, decorative wall plaques, blue historical plaques, statues, weather vanes, front doors, street signs and coal hole covers.

Alongside his photos, Bill began to research the area thoroughly – its history, its stories, and its residents. Bill Wyman's Chelsea is the result of this work: a comprehensive and informative guide to a London borough steeped in culture and history, as seen through the personal and affectionate lens of a long-standing resident, who himself plays a part in the history of the area.

Complete with walking tour itineraries, maps, an A-Z of streets, historical information, over 300 of Bill’s photos and knowledge from an insider; Bill has produced what can confidently be called the ‘Master Book on Chelsea’.

Bill meets Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace's final match of the season

Bill has revealed that he attended the final match of the season for his team Crystal Palace.

Bill says:

I went to see Crystal Palace’s final match of the season against Nottingham Forest. I’ve been a Crystal Palace fan since the first time I saw them in 1946 on my 10th birthday.

It was a memorable occasion – again meeting up with my great friend, manager Roy Hodgson.

Bill pays tribute to 'Simply The Best' Tina Turner

Bill has paid tribute to music legend Tina Turner, who sadly passed away this week after a decades-spanning, genre-defining musical career.

Bill says:

Tina Turner was a ‘Force of Nature’ onstage. I knew her for three decades. Whenever we met, she was always friendly and humourous, and she would refer to me as ‘Mr Cool’. She will be sorely missed.

Below is a photo sent from Bill captioned:
