Bill has fondly remembered his ‘great and close friend’ the iconic photographer Steve Hiett in a tribute following Steve’s passing in August this year.

Steve was renowned photography, having gotten his first photographic break capturing images of Jimi Hendrix in the 1970s, following joining Nova magazine as a fashion photographer in 1968. In the 1970s, his work regularly appeared in magazines such as Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire.

He worked extensively in music for much of his career, including releasing the guitar solo album Down On The Road By The Beach, which also included a photobook.

Bill says:

Steve was a great and close friend that I first met in the 1960s, him being a friend of Charlie Watts and his wife Shirley, where they first met at art college.

We spent many years together in Paris, where he lived and worked shooting wonderful photos for the numerous fashion magazines, with a style all his own, and was well-loved by all he worked with.

I miss Steve enormously – he was a true ‘one-off’ if ever there was one.

My sympathy goes to Louise, his lady.

Bill took the photo of Steve that appears on this page.

Steve died on August 28, 2019. He was 79.
