Bill Wyman has been metal detecting coins for years while out and about metal detecting - and Bill has created a series of fantastic galleries that show off his metal detecting finds, dating from 1066 to c. 1600.

Find about about Bill Wyman's metal detector

"Here are some of the 'hammered' silver coins I've found from the Middle Ages," says Bill. "The cut ones were cut for change - the cut following the short or long crosses on the back. Many are misshapen, due to them being 'clipped' - pieces cut from the edges by unscrupulous people, who then sold the silver on for personal gain."

"Others were just badly struck at the time of minting," Bill adds. "Most are worn through use, or damaged by being in the ground for hundreds of years, or being hit by agricultural implements."
