The first leg of the Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings tour in Spain kicked off in earnest on Thursday, May 27, with both Bill and Terry heading by Eurostar to Paris. Bill says that when they arrived, it was chucking it down with rain and, faced with a queue of over 200 people waiting for a taxi, opted to hire a chauffeur car instead. Bill also gave a lift to a couple of people from Hull, driving to the Gare Montparnasse railway station through heavy traffic and the downpour.
With Bill and Terry safely on the train to Hendaye in Spain, the train left in the afternoon, arriving at 9:30 to be met by the tour promoter Carlos Goyarrola and his driver, who took Bill the last 140km to Vitoria. Bill and Terry finally arrived at the hotel in Vitoria, meeting up with Tony, Dave South and the crew, Broady, Frank and Nick at the bar, before Bill checked into his room.
Bill was up early on Friday, May 28, to be greeted by Terry, Carlos and a few others, and was driven to the old cathedral. Bill met up with the archaeologists and specialists there, and took lots of photos (such as the one pictured). Bill says that he found out that his friend, the novelist Ken Follett, had visited the cathedral and based one of his books around it. When Bill left, he was presented with a boxed model of the cathedral, and a book about the renovation and archaeology.
They group then went to a restaurant for what Bill says was fabulous food and oysters, as well as good wine; afterwards, the band left to perform a sound check at the venue, and ran through several songs in the open air.
The evening arrived, and Bill prepared for the gig at the Plaza del Machete in Vitoria in Spain, with Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings taking to the open air stage at 9:30 to an audience of over 600 fans. Bill says that stage was really cold for the whole performance.
The band was: Bill Wyman (bass/vocals), Graham Broad (drums), Beverley Skeete (vocals), Georgie Fame (organ/vocals), Terry Taylor (guitar/vocals), Geraint Watkins (keyboards/vocals), Frank Mead and Nick Payn (horns/vocals).
The band launched into I Got A Woman (Georgie), followed by Sweet Soul Music (Beverley), Chicken Shack Boogie (Geraint), Too Late (Terry), Jump Jive & Wail (Georgie), Melody (Georgie/Beverley), She’s Lookin’ Good (Beverley), Three Cool Cats (Georgie), All Night Long (Bill), It’s A Man’s World (Beverley), Just Your Fool (Frank), Hit The Road Jack (Georgie), That’s Better For Me Baby (Terry), I’ll Be Satisfied (Beverley), Johnny B Goode (Geraint), I Just Wanna Make Love To You (Beverley), and You Never Can Tell (Bill).
The band left the stage to great applause and returned for encores, including Honky Tonk Women (Bill), and I Put A Spell On You (Beverley).
The band left the stage to huge applause, before relaxing in their dressing rooms with a few drinks and then heading back to the hotel. The Spanish tour had begun.
